Every so often a product comes along that is quite different and makes you wonder why didn't someone make this before? The Mountain Equipment Microtherm Alpine jacket is just such a product.
Think of an ultralight windproof jacket and then line it with a thin fleece wicking lining. Our photos show how this lining fabric has a waffle effect which traps air and increases insulation.
The outer fabric is ME own He30.rs used in their lightest sleeping bags. This fabric is similar to Pertex Quantum and featherlite in terms of weight. As a result the jacket packs down to a small size in the supplied stuff sack.
What you end up with is a single garment that replaces both a mid layer and a windproof and is the only top that you will need to wear the majority of the time. It keeps you warm, dry and protected from the wind.
If it really rains then put a hard shell on top and if you get cold when you stop, put on something like a belay jacket.
But in terms of wind and light rain the Mountain Equipment Microtherm Alpine jacket is able to take them in it's stride. The lining makes it cosy and comfortable without making you too warm when you are active.
In mild conditions you could even forget a base layer and wear the Microtherm Alpine next to skin.
